The Math Behind the Results

Residual sugar is measured in grams per litre. To find the sugar in your glass, multiply the concentration by the volume in litres:

Sugar (g) = Residual sugar (g/L) × Serving volume (mL) / 1,000

Once you have the sugar in grams, the other values follow from standard nutrition rules:

  • Carbs from sugar: sugar is a carbohydrate, so the gram weight is the same as the sugar weight.
  • Calories from sugar: each gram of sugar provides 4 kcal.
  • Daily value: the FDA reference value for added sugar is 50 g per day; percentage = grams ÷ 50 × 100.
  • Teaspoons: one teaspoon of sugar weighs about 4.2 g.
  • Sugar per 100 mL: divide g/L by 10. A wine with 40 g/L has 4 g of sugar per 100 mL, about 16 kcal and almost 1 teaspoon.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — A glass of dry white: A 150 mL pour of Chardonnay with 5 g/L RS. Sugar = 5 × 150 / 1000 = 0.75 g. That's roughly 3 kcal from sugar and 1.5% of the 50 g daily value. The wine's total calorie count is higher because alcohol adds about 7 kcal per gram.
Example 2 — Moscato: A 150 mL glass of Moscato at 80 g/L RS. Sugar = 80 × 150 / 1000 = 12 g. That's 48 kcal from sugar, 24% of the daily value, and about 2.9 teaspoons. Compare a glass of dry red at 2 g/L: only 0.3 g sugar and 1.2 kcal.
Example 3 — Half a bottle of Port: A 375 mL pour of Port at 100 g/L. Sugar = 100 × 375 / 1000 = 37.5 g. That's 150 kcal from sugar and 75% of the daily added-sugar reference, before counting alcohol calories. Even a half-pour with a friend means about 18 g per 187.5 mL glass.

Wine Sugar FAQ

Does dry wine mean zero sugar? Not exactly. Most dry wines still have some residual sugar, often 1–5 g/L. You usually can't taste it because acidity and tannins balance the sweetness.

Is all the carbohydrate in wine from sugar? In finished wine, almost all residual carbs are simple sugars. Some sweet or fortified wines may contain added grape must or other sweeteners, but residual fructose and glucose are the main contributors.

Why doesn't my wine label list sugar? Nutrition labeling is voluntary for alcohol beverages in the U.S. and many other countries. When sugar is listed, it's often on the producer's website or tech sheet under residual sugar.

Are low-carb wines really low in sugar? Many low-carb wines are dry and contain less than 1 g/L RS, but the alcohol still contributes calories. A moderately dry wine with 4–7 g/L RS can still be low in carbs per glass.
