Calculation Method

This calculator uses a simple three-step model. First, your serving size is converted to millilitres (1 fl oz = 29.5735 ml) and multiplied by the number of servings to give the total volume:

Total wine consumed (ml) = serving size (ml) × number of servings

Next, the fat and calorie values per 100 ml are applied to that volume:

Total fat (g) = fat per 100 ml × total ml ÷ 100
Total calories (kcal) = calories per 100 ml × total ml ÷ 100

Because each gram of fat provides 9 kcal, fat calories are total fat × 9. The tool then reports the percentage of total calories coming from fat and the percentage of the Daily Value for fat, based on a reference intake of 78 g per day on a 2,000-calorie diet. If you leave the advanced fields untouched, the calculator uses standard USDA values, where all common wine styles contain 0.00 g of fat per 100 ml.

A standard restaurant pour is 150 ml (about 5 oz). Late-harvest or fortified wines are often served in smaller 75–100 ml glasses, so use the serving size that matches what you actually drink.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Two glasses of red wine. With the type set to red, servings = 2, and size = 150 ml, total volume is 300 ml. Fat per 100 ml is 0.00 g, so total fat = 0.00 g. Fat calories = 0 kcal. Total calories = 85 × 300 ÷ 100 = 255 kcal. The fat percentage and Daily Value are both 0%.

Example 2 — Testing a higher-fat fortified wine. Suppose you want to model a dessert wine with 0.20 g fat per 100 ml and 160 kcal per 100 ml, served as one 5 oz (147.9 ml) glass. Total fat = 0.20 × 147.9 ÷ 100 = 0.30 g. Fat calories = 0.30 × 9 = 2.7 kcal. Total calories = 160 × 147.9 ÷ 100 = 236.6 kcal. Fat contributes just 1.1% of calories, and the DV for fat is 0.38%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wine contain fat? Standard wines are essentially fat-free. Government food databases list 0.00 g of total fat per 100 ml for red, white, and sparkling wine. The fat shown may be scientifically non-zero only at trace levels below rounding thresholds, so for macro tracking you can treat it as zero.

If wine has no fat, why does it affect my body weight? Calorie balance still matters. A typical 150 ml glass of wine provides 78–160 kcal depending on the style. Alcohol is metabolised, and excess calories from alcohol or sugar can be stored as body fat. This is the real reason wine may show up on a fat-loss plan.

What is the Daily Value for fat? The FDA uses 78 g of total fat per day as a reference for a 2,000-kcal diet. Our calculator uses that value to estimate how much of a day's fat allowance a serving covers.

Can I change the fat value for a specific bottle? Yes. Use the Advanced Options section. If you have nutrition panel data for a particular wine, enter its fat and calorie values per 100 ml and the calculator will use those instead of the presets.
