How the Calories Are Estimated

This calculator uses the MET (metabolic equivalent) method. One MET is roughly the energy you burn at rest, and multiplying your weight in kilograms by the MET value and the hours of activity gives an estimate of calories burned. The formula used here is:

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × hours × step-height modifier

Baseline MET values for step-ups come from the Compendium of Physical Activities: 3.5 for light stepping, 5.0 for moderate, and 8.0 for vigorous training.

Step height is applied as a modifier because a higher platform requires more work per rep. The modifier is 0.9 for a low step, 1.0 for medium, and 1.25 for a high step. If you do not know your exact step height, the medium setting is a good default.

Step-by-Step Example

A 70 kg person does moderate step-ups for 20 minutes on a medium step.

1. Convert time: 20 min = 0.333 hours
2. Calories = 5.0 × 70 × 0.333 × 1.0 = 116.7 kcal
3. Calories per minute = 116.7 ÷ 20 = 5.8 kcal/min

The same person stepping vigorously on a high step would burn roughly 8.0 × 70 × 0.333 × 1.25 = 233.3 kcal.

  • Treat the result as an estimate, not a medical measurement. Individual fitness level and muscle mass change actual energy use.

Does step height affect the MET value directly? For precise lab-measured values, wearable devices and metabolic testing vary by individual.

Is this the same as stair climbing? No. Stair climbing uses different oxygen cost values, and the MET for climbing stairs is typically higher. If you are climbing actual stairs, look for a dedicated stair-climbing calculator.
