A food can have a high GI yet still produce a low GL if the portion is small; conversely, a moderate-GI food can create a high GL when served in a large bowl. The tool applies the standard formula:

Example 1 — one cup of jasmine rice (190 g). Jasmine has GI 68 and 29 g of carbohydrate per 100 g. Total carbs: 29 ÷ 100 × 190 = 55.1 g. Fiber: 0.3 ÷ 100 × 190 ≈ 0.6 g. Available carbs ≈ 54.5 g. - Measure rice cooked rather than dry. Dry rice roughly triples in weight after cooking, so a 60 g dry portion becomes about 180 g cooked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does sticky rice have such a high GL? Sticky rice is composed almost entirely of amylopectin, a highly branched starch that enzymes digest quickly, pushing its GI to around 86. Combined with its high carbohydrate density, sticky rice produces a very large glycemic response even in moderate servings.
Does rinsing or soaking rice change the glycemic load? Rinsing removes surface starch and may slightly reduce stickiness, but it does not meaningfully change the GI. Soaking before cooking can make grains softer, which may actually increase digestibility and glycemic response.
