Stacking is a compound movement — bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching — so it burns far more energy than standing. This calculator compares the energy you burn stacking to the energy burned by walking at a comfortable 3 mph pace, then converts that into steps using the standard 2,000-steps-per-mile benchmark.
Every activity gets a MET score from the Compendium of Physical Activities. A MET of 1 is the energy you burn at rest; the compendium rates light stacking at 2.8 MET, moderate stacking at 4.5 MET, and vigorous stacking at 6.0 MET. Walking at 3 mph is about 3.5 MET, which works out to roughly 100 steps per minute.

The step part of the formula is a ratio: at 4.5 MET, you are working about 1.29× harder than walking, so each stacking minute equals about 129 walking steps. Body weight drops out of the step calculation because steps measure effort relative to your own body — a heavier person burns more calories per step, but the number of steps is the same. - Treat the result as an energy-equivalent step target, not a physical footfall count. Your wearable counted actual steps; this is a fair translation of effort instead.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Double-counting. If you already logged the activity with a wrist tracker, treat this result as an alternative description of the same effort, not extra steps to add on top.
Unit mix-ups. Entering 30 intending minutes but selecting hours produces a 30× overestimate. Check the unit before you calculate.
Unrealistic intensity. Rating light chores as vigorous inflates your steps. When in doubt, use the lower option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't the step count change with my body weight? Steps are a relative measure of effort: the MET-to-walking ratio compares activities at the same body weight, so weight cancels out. A 60 kg and a 90 kg person both burn more calories stacking than walking at the same pace, and the step-equivalent formula reflects that ratio, not absolute calories. Weight only enters the calorie estimate.
